Safety Tips When Remodelling a Bathroom
Take a Look around our websites for information on remodeling your bathroom.....
When it comes to remodelling a bathroom, whether you hire a professional or not, on some level you will be involved with the ‘construction zone’.
Like any area where there is active building, plumbing or electrical work happening there are always risks and safety precautions that need to be taken. As the bathroom being worked on is in your own home, safety should not be forgotten about, but embraced.
Firstly some of the basics of safety when it comes to remodelling a bathroom are to ensure that water and electrical are turned off and most importantly never meet. A clear working area goes a long way, if you are tiling and break tiles or have extras, don’t level them on the ground as they are a risk to trip over. The same goes for your tools and the cables they use, never leave them in walkways where they can be tripped over. In terms of tools, you should only use power tools if you are comfortable with them, if you are new to a new power drill for example, it pays to practice before using it in your bathroom to ensure you know the specifics of it.
Heavy lifting is also a hazard in any workplace, and your bathroom is no exception. While you may just be able to move that new shower or bath in by yourself, the safer way would be to have a friend help you life it into place. This way you won’t put too much strain on your back and it allows for precise (exact) placement of the item.
Whilst we all love our pets and children, left unsupervised on a work site (such as the home bathroom) can lead to disastrous consequences. All it takes is for you to be busy tiling the floor, or connecting the plumbing when suddenly one of your children or the family pet has injured the work site or worse, themselves. So ensure when working on your home bathroom, that if the kids or dog comes into the bathroom while you are working, that they are properly supervised. Even after hours when you are not working, the area should be blocked off, again to prevent injury.
Safety on any remodelling job is no laughing matter, every day people ignore the most simple safety precautions and end up injuring themselves and others. Don’t let this happen to you, ensure that any job you work on (especially in your own home) follows strict safety rules. It may be difficult at times, and cost money in some cases, but it could very well save yourself from injury and the people you love.
